Portrayed by Dan Castellanetta

Information

Nickname(s) Steely Phil
Gender Male
Age 81 (as of episode "Grandpa's Birthday")
Occupation retired
Family Mitzi (sister)
Spouse(s) Grandma
Children Miles

PERSONALITY

(voiced by Dan Castellanetta) is a character on the Nickelodeon cartoon Hey Arnold! who owns the local boarding house. He is Arnold's grandfather, Pookie/Gertrude's husband, and Miles' father. His nickname is Steely Phil. The nickname Steely comes from his undying support of American steelworkers. [citation needed]

Although he gives often poor advice, and is rather goofy, Phil is a good grandfather, and loves Arnold. He calls Arnold by the nickname "Short Man". Phil gave the impression that he may have multiple grandsons in 'Grandpa's Sister' when he responded disagreeingly to a claim Arnold made about being his only grandson.

In one episode, Grandpa reveals that Gertrude and he were in the same class as children during the Great Depression (there were no jobs back then). She had a huge crush on Phil, but could only express it by picking on him, much as Helga does with Arnold. This is a further hint of an eventual relationship for Arnold and Helga.

Helga G. Pataki

First appearance Downtown as Fruits

Created by Craig Bartlett
Portrayed by Francesca Marie Smith

Information

Nickname(s) Pataki
Gender Female
Age 9 (beginning of series)
Occupation 4th grade student
Family Big Bob Pataki (father)
Miriam Pataki (mother)
Olga Pataki (sister)
Spouse(s) Arnold (in possible future)

PERSONALITY

Helga is a tomboy as evidenced by her interest in playing contact sports alongside her male classmates, blatant lack of femininity and disregard, to near dislike, for stereotypical female behavior, as seen in the episode "Helga's Makeover". She is also very cynical and something of a bully, bossing around her fourth-grade classmates with an iron fist (especially her best friend, Phoebe). Despite this, she is heavily emotional, being able to comprehend spectrum emotions such as love and hate. This emotional extremity is a running joke throughout the series, as Helga is often the first to go into hysterics in times of crisis.

Helga is also extremely intelligent. In the episode "The Aptitude Test", where the class takes a standardized exam, it is eventually revealed that Helga achieved a perfect score on the test unlike anyone else and the most outstanding result since Olga Pataki took the test. Helga's consistent bad grades at school however, are most likely caused by her apparent lack of motivation, attention and academic concern. Her family seems not to care about this issue (as seen in the episode "Quantity Time"). Yet Helga has shown her potential on several occasions, among others being a spelling bee finalist and having the confidence to win the only competition her sister failed at (although, she did not follow through on the latter by actually competing). She also displays a gift for poetry, repeatedly making dramatic soliloquies expressing a situation or feeling with a generous use of vocabulary, especially for someone her age. These instances were more simple in the earlier episodes, but as the series progressed, grew in their intensity. Aside from poetry, Helga exhibits further aspects of cultural experience, being able to identify the work of Edward Hopper and make reference to George Orwell's 1984 in "Helga on the Couch".

It is revealed in "April Fool's Day" that Helga was born sometime in late March. Arnold presents her with a small gift on April First, telling her that it's for her birthday which was "last week".

Gerald Johanssen

First appearance Downtown as Fruits

Information

Gender male
Age 9 (beginning of the series)
Occupation student
Family Martin Johanssen (father)
Mrs. Johanssen (mother)
Jamie O. (brother)
Timberly (sister)

PERSONALITY

a fictional character in the Nickelodeon animated television series Hey Arnold!. Otherwise known as Dan Schneider, he is the titular character's best friend and sidekick. Gerald is often acknowledged as the token character for the show. He was voiced by Jamil Walker Smith throughout the entire run of the series, even as Smith went through puberty (the voice change was explained away when "Gerald's Tonsils" were removed).

Gerald has known Arnold for years (if the scenes from "Eugene's Bike", "Helga on the Couch" and "The Journal" are of any indication). Besides being Arnold's sidekick, Gerald also has a good deal of knowledge of many legendary stories in the city, or "urban legends" as he calls them ("Stoop Kid" was the first he told, while "Ghost Bride" was the last). He apparently gets these myths from a source he has nicknamed "Fuzzy Slippers", mentioned in many episodes as his reliable assistant. Also, until Arnold taught him, Gerald did not even know how to ride a bicycle ("Gerald's Secret"). Gerald's catchphrases usually were "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" and "You're a bold kid."

At school, Gerald is the class president ("Cool Party", "Mr. Green Runs"), and considers himself very cool, and apparently, so do his friends. When it was revealed that Arnold was on Rhonda's so-called "Cool List", and that Gerald was on her other list known as "The Geek List" (due to a grudge Rhonda had against him over running for class president), many classmates were surprised to find this out ("Cool Party"). He seems to know a great deal of children's street culture.

His most distinct features are his tall, Marge Simpson-style hair (classmate Helga often calls him "Tall Hair Boy"), and his shirt with the number 33 on it (he also wears 33 on sports uniforms, probably as a reference to either Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Patrick Ewing

PERSONALITY
Arnold is a dreamer and an idealist who always tries to see the best in people and to do the right thing. Whenever he sees someone in trouble, Arnold goes out of his way to help them out, even if it is not sensible to do so (an example being when he tried to protect some of his classmates, who had mooned the school principal). Arnold often acts as the stable center to those around him, whether he is around his "family" in his grandparents' (Dan Castellaneta and Tress MacNeille) boarding house The Sunset Arms, or around his friends at his school, P.S. 118. According to the Parents Day and The Journal episodes, Arnold's parents, anthropologist Miles and biologist/physician Stella, were doing missions in the Guatemalan jungle when they disappeared.

He has a love for jazz. He is seen in one episode discussing with his friends various sound systems, owning himself, an advanced sound system. His room contains interesting technology such as a remote control that controls everything in his room and a collapsible couch. He also has a skylight in his room.
